A more common garage cabinet material is of course wood. Wooden cabinets are available in many styles and can be a great place to start for an inexpensive solution to garage storage. Wood cabinets can be constructed out of a variety of materials such as hardwood, plywood, particle board and MDF. They can come finished, unfinished or laminated with a variety of materials such as Formica or PVC. The shelving and frame construction and connection methods vary from simple nailed or screwed designs, to cam lock systems or dovetail joinery. It is important to choose a construction method appropriate to the cabinets intended use.
These things are useful, but they are either dirty or too messy to store inside the house. The garage is the perfect place to store them; since a lot of space is left even after you have parked your car. You can utilize this space and also be sure that your goods will be safe. But to store all your things properly and in an orderly manner, you need a proper garage cabinet system.
A very inexpensive type of garage cabinet commonly used is plastic resin. Plastics are extremely durable, stain and chemical resistant, waterproof and do not rust. Common plastics used are High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). Though plastic cabinets are the most affordable they provide the least number of options in terms of design and style. They come free standing, rolling or can hang on bare walls or slat wall systems. Load capacities vary but plastic garage cabinets should be utilized for light duty storage only.
You can mount garage cabinet on the wall or it can sit on the floor. The wall mounting is probably what you would prefer. It is up off the floor giving you more space. Setting cabinets on the floor exposes them to moisture. This is a real problem if your cabinets are made from wood. Wall mount cabinets also keep the contents of the unit out of reach to most little critters like mice.
Once you decide to move ahead with improving your garage storage, the first plan of action is to decide what items you are going to want to store. The easiest way is to group like items together and determine how many garage cabinets you are going to need to store the materials. Too often people will throw up garage cabinets or shelves and then start to stuff them full of things only to realize at the end they either have way too much space left over or they did not create enough space for all of the stuff they had.
First, plan for cabinets. If your garage is also a workshop, you will want cabinets that work with and around your tools, supplies and workbenches. If you and your family have a lot of sports equipment, you will need to plan on the best way to store those, as well. Gardeners will need shelves for storing seed, fertilizers, pots, and stakes. It pays to take some time to think about the dimension and total amount of cabinet storage you need to get things up off the floor and out of dark corners.
