A garage is not a aesthetically pleasing place to the human eye. Not that is meant to be that anyway. It is just a garage you know. But, having said that, you do not want your garage to look like world war 4 just took place. You do not want to be savaging around in there to find something that is needed right away. You could even hurt yourself wading through the never ending piles of who knows what that has been put in there.
You can get garage cabinets that look really nice or ones that look just okay. If you really care about the looks of your garage go for the nice looking cabinets. You will pay more for the looks. There are cabinets that are made of plastic and units that are made of wood. Plastic does not need to be painted. Wood may look nicer but will require more up keep.
On the flip side, there are several disadvantages to owning plastic garage containers that may make you want to consider some other alternatives: 1. Weight Load - plastic cabinets are not going to be able to carry as much weight as steel cabinets do. Overtime, if you load down the cabinets with heavy items, the plastic shelves will become warped. 2. Doors - as time goes on, plastic cabinets with locks or latches become harder to close and eventually will warp. One of the benefits of going with garage cabinets over garage shelves is the ability to lock up things out of reach from the children. If a latch or lock is going to stop working over time, you lose out on one of the key benefits of the storage. 3. Durability - over time, plastic can become broken or damaged. There is a chance after several years you may be looking to replace them if you do not treat them properly when taking items out or putting things away. 4. Stains - while plastic shelves are easy to clean, if there is a chemical spill, depending on the type of liquid, it can stain the cabinets, thus ruining the color and the appearance.
A very inexpensive type of garage cabinet commonly used is plastic resin. Plastics are extremely durable, stain and chemical resistant, waterproof and do not rust. Common plastics used are High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). Though plastic cabinets are the most affordable they provide the least number of options in terms of design and style. They come free standing, rolling or can hang on bare walls or slat wall systems. Load capacities vary but plastic garage cabinets should be utilized for light duty storage only.
Whether you go with ready-made, custom, or recycled cabinets, you will need some basic skills and tools to safely attach wall cabinets. Be sure to use screws, not nails, and that the screws are long enough to penetrate the studs at least 1-1/2 inches. Consider the most practical height for your cabinets, so things can be reached easily. Whether you do the work yourself or hire it done, you will be proud to have a place for everything and everything in its place when you have got your new garage cabinets.
Broadly, they can be classified as metal, wooden, and plywood cabinets. But deciding which of these is most suitable for a garage requires deeper consideration. Metal cabinets score over wooden and plywood cabinets, in terms of durability. This is the reason metal cabinets are more expensive when compared to the other two types of cabinets. But durability may not always be essential for storing the objects that normally end up in garages.
