Broadly, they can be classified as metal, wooden, and plywood cabinets. But deciding which of these is most suitable for a garage requires deeper consideration. Metal cabinets score over wooden and plywood cabinets, in terms of durability. This is the reason metal cabinets are more expensive when compared to the other two types of cabinets. But durability may not always be essential for storing the objects that normally end up in garages.
"Attractiveness, quality and style" means that the cabinets are made from good materials and are well-designed. Shoddy, particle-board cabinets, flimsy doors, poor paint finishes or cabinets with dings or scratches are to be avoided. While your cabinets do not need to look like they are in a showroom -- this is a garage after all! -- they do need to convey strength, functionality and a certain self-confidence about how they look. Coordinated color schemes are a must. Good finishes are expected. And strong materials will only add to the value.
It is critical to get the planning part done first, because it will greatly impact the price you pay for garage cabinets. Research shows that almost one half of your budget for cabinets will go toward the larger cabinets, so you want to make sure you have a well thought out plan so all of your large items will fit in the cabinets that you buy and also that the larger items are worth storing. Not every large item needs to be put in a cabinet, some items might be able to be placed closer to the ceiling if you get an overhead storage unit.
If the cabinets are to carry heavy loads be sure to utilize dovetail joinery as it is the strongest way to construct wood cabinets. Cam lock systems can be used for medium duty storage, with simple nailed or screwed designs left for only light duty storage. Wood cabinets can also come as free standing, rolling or hanging. When hanging cabinets on a wall, again be sure to utilize a hanging method appropriate for its intended use. For heavy duty cabinets the hanging method should be capable of supporting at least 250-300 lbs. Check with the manufacturer to insure their hanging system meets your needs. Prices vary for wood cabinets based on size and all the above design criteria but can be very affordable.
It is always advisable to build the garage cabinet organizer at least a few inches above the floor. This ensures that it does not get spoiled by the water leaking from garden pipe or other sources. Doing this will make it easier to clean the garage too. The plastic and metal garage cabinet organizers are mostly available off the shelf in home centers. Most of them come with heavy duty wheels, so that they can be moved anywhere you want to shift them to. While selecting any cabinet for your garage, remember to go for a design and material that can take on rough handling and last long even in extreme weather conditions.
The only disadvantage of the ready made garage cabinet system is that it may not be useful in utilizing the space available in the most effective manner. Thus, the decision to buy a finished one or get one custom-made depends on the space in your garage, the time you want to spend on the project and the fact that these cabinets fulfill your specific need or not. Whatever you choose, one thing is for sure - cabinets make your garage look neat and tidy.
