If the garage owner is accustomed to using the garage as workshop, and needs to store relevant equipment, then garage cabinets made from metal are the right choice, even if they cost a few dollars more. If, however, the cupboard is to be used to store lighter things like some equipment for car, or other outdoor gear, then plywood cupboards make more sense. In so far as choice between wooden and plywood is concerned, it is always better to opt for plywood. These serve the storage purpose, and can withstand rougher handling than some of the wood varieties.
However, this durability of cabinets made from regular wood pales in front of the durability offered by metal cabinets. When compared to metal cabinets, wooden cabinets are usually cheaper. But this is because wood needs to be maintained. Water, termites, and even chipping due to regular usage can easily damage these cabinets. The next option is the garage cabinet made of plywood. Plywood cabinets offer two advantages; they are cheaper than both metal and wooden cabinets made from regular wood, and they look elegant just like the wooden cabinet. But this affordability and aesthetic appeal comes at a price.
The garage is often one of most neglected spaces of our home. The garage space is occupied with a wide variety of smaller tools like wrenches, spanners, jacks as well as larger equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, and snow blowers. Of course we also tend to store the not-so fragrant fertilizers and pesticides out there as well.
Metal cabinets can be found in almost every mechanic shop, race car garage, and car enthusiast`s home. They are strong, durable, beautiful and expensive. Metal garage cabinets can be constructed from various metals including aluminum, steel or stainless steel, and can come painted, unpainted, powder coated or polished. The main advantage of utilizing metal cabinets is strength and durability. Metal cabinets can come free standing, rolling or can be mounted to walls like the other styles. However metal garage cabinets have much greater load carrying capacities that can exceed 1000 lbs per cabinet.
However cabinets do not have to cost a fortune and can easily be installed yourself with a few simple tools. Garage cabinets are modular, meaning you can pick and choose from a number of sizes (modules) to suit your needs or to fit around existing obstructions such as hot water heaters, switches or doors. We will look at a few different cabinet styles and discuss the advantages of each type.
Broadly, they can be classified as metal, wooden, and plywood cabinets. But deciding which of these is most suitable for a garage requires deeper consideration. Metal cabinets score over wooden and plywood cabinets, in terms of durability. This is the reason metal cabinets are more expensive when compared to the other two types of cabinets. But durability may not always be essential for storing the objects that normally end up in garages.
