You ca not have a truly organized garage without garage cabinets! They are the best garage organizing resource any garage owner or even home workshop owner would look for to declutter their garage. Cabinets are available in a wide range of materials. From being weather proof, rust proof, and insect proof to just being sturdy enough to hold anything you can think of. They are also easy to fit into your budget, ranging from pegboards, heavy plastic, wood, to metal cabinets.
There are many options when it comes to garage storage and if you are looking for garage cabinets, then plastic cabinets are definitely an option if you are looking to save money but still have a nice look to your garage space. With the lower price point however, comes some problems that you will not find in say metal garage cabinets. When you look at the pros and cons of plastic garage cabinets, you will be able to see if they do not offer some things that you may be looking for in a storage solution, or if the price is low enough that you are willing to settle for what they offer.
If the cabinets are to carry heavy loads be sure to utilize dovetail joinery as it is the strongest way to construct wood cabinets. Cam lock systems can be used for medium duty storage, with simple nailed or screwed designs left for only light duty storage. Wood cabinets can also come as free standing, rolling or hanging. When hanging cabinets on a wall, again be sure to utilize a hanging method appropriate for its intended use. For heavy duty cabinets the hanging method should be capable of supporting at least 250-300 lbs. Check with the manufacturer to insure their hanging system meets your needs. Prices vary for wood cabinets based on size and all the above design criteria but can be very affordable.
A very inexpensive type of garage cabinet commonly used is plastic resin. Plastics are extremely durable, stain and chemical resistant, waterproof and do not rust. Common plastics used are High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). Though plastic cabinets are the most affordable they provide the least number of options in terms of design and style. They come free standing, rolling or can hang on bare walls or slat wall systems. Load capacities vary but plastic garage cabinets should be utilized for light duty storage only.
Garage cabinets made from plywood are more easily damaged when compared to the metal cupboards. Durability of plywood cabinets is less when compared with wooden cabinets made from regular wood. However, plywood cabinets are generally more or equally durable when compared to wooden cabinets made from other types of wood. Which of these cupboard types is ideal for a garage can be decided based on what is to be stored in it.
It is critical to get the planning part done first, because it will greatly impact the price you pay for garage cabinets. Research shows that almost one half of your budget for cabinets will go toward the larger cabinets, so you want to make sure you have a well thought out plan so all of your large items will fit in the cabinets that you buy and also that the larger items are worth storing. Not every large item needs to be put in a cabinet, some items might be able to be placed closer to the ceiling if you get an overhead storage unit.
